The New York Yankees won the World Series in 2000, defeating the crosstown New York Mets, 4 games to 1.

The so-called Subway Series marked the first time the Yankees and Mets had met in the postseason, and the first time two New York teams faced off in the Fall Classic since the Yanks beat the Brooklyn Dodgers in seven games in 1956.

Even though the Mets never led the 2000 Series, or even tied it up, all of the games were close …

The Yankees won Game 1 in Yankee Stadium on a 12th-inning walk-off single from Jose Vizcaino after tying the game on a Chuck Knoblauch sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Then they held off a 5-run Mets rally in the top of the ninth to take Game 2, 6-5.

The Mets came back to win Game 3 at Shea Stadium, scoring two in the bottom of the eight inning to break a 2-2 tie, then holding serve at 4-2.

Game 4 was another close one, with the Yanks winning 3-2 and all the scoring done in the first three innings.

Then in Game 5, the teams entered the ninth tied 2-2. The Yankees staged a two-out rally that the yielded two runs, and the Mets were unable to answer.

When all was said and done, the Yankees had their third consecutive World Series title, and their fourth in five years.

Derek Jeter was named the 2000 World Series MVP on the strength of a .409 batting average, two solo home runs, and six runs scored.
