Peyton Manning rookie cards have stood among the hottest football cards in the entire hobby from the moment they debuted in the fall of 1998.

It’s not hard to see why, either.

After all, Manning had turned in a stellar college career at Tennessee and stood toe-to-toe with Ryan Leaf in the battle to be the number-one overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft.

Manning had a few things working for him on that front, not the least of which was a stellar pedigree as the son of long-time Saints quarterback Archie Manning and would-be-superstar (if not for a congenital neck problem) Cooper Manning.

As the draft neared, debate raged about which of the two QBs the lowly Indianapolis Colts would take with the first pick.

While many considered Leaf to have better skills and a higher ceiling, most considered Manning to be more ready to step into an NFL pocket and lead a rebuilding team.

And that’s how it played out.

The Colts took Manning with that first pick, leaving Leaf (ha!) to the San Diego Chargers and setting up the most glorious decade in the history of Indianapolis football (at least so far).

Over the course of 13 seasons in Indy, Manning set all sorts of records and battled Tom Brady for the title of “greatest ever” for most of his run.

Even after leaving the Colts to finish his career with four seasons with the Denver Broncos, Manning kept raising the bar, including an amazing 55 touchdown passes in 2013, a record that still stands.

All in all, Manning won five NFL MVP awards and two Super Bowls, and he picked up 14 Pro-Bowl and seven All-Pro selections along the way.

With more than 71,000 passing yards and 539 TD tosses, Manning sailed into the Hall of Fame in 2021.

His football cards — and especially his rookie cards — are Canton-worthy, too, and they have burned bright on the hobby landscape without pausing to so much as take a breath since all the way back in 1998.
