If Mookie Betts rookie cards hadn’t already been among the hottest in the hobby as the 2020 baseball season dawned (they were), then they surely would have short to the top of the charts on February 10.

That’s the day, on the eve of Spring Training, when the Boston Red Sox traded Betts and David Price to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Jeter Downs, Connor Wong and Alex Verdugo. And, just like that, one of the game’s greatest players had landed in its second biggest market to play for maybe its most glamorous team.

Already a superstar with legions of fans in New England and all across the continent, Betts suddenly found himself the subject of just about every conversation among the humongous Dodgers fanbase and baseball fans in general.

At just 27 years of age, Betts had already amassed a resume that featured a .301 batting average, 139 home runs, 470 RBI, 613 runs scored, a sparkly .893 OPS, four Gold Glove awards in right field, four All-Star appearances, and the 2018 American League Most Valuable Player award.

It was an astounding record that added up to nearly 42 WAR (Baseball Reference version) and a path the seemed to lead straight to the Hall of Fame.

The only real question as Betts headed to L.A. seemed to be how long he’d stay there, given that he’d expressed a willingness and desire to play on year-to-year contracts rather than sign an extension with the Sox — an effort to maximize earnings during his prime.

Well, it didn’t take too long for Betts and the Dodgers to lay those fears to rest.

On July 22, 2020, just as the truncated, pandemic-torn season finally got underway, the two sides agreed to a 12-year, $365-million extension.

And then Betts went out and had another MVP-caliber season, eventually finishing second in NL voting to Freddie Freeman, but getting the last laugh when his Dodgers copped the World Series title.

It was their first championship since 1988 and helped to make Betts even more of a diamond hero.

All along the way his baseball cards, especially those RCs, turned hotter and more expensive than ever.
