The 1986 Sportflics set was the first new major baseball card issue since Donruss and Fleer crashed the Topps party back in 1981.

As such, it had the hobby all frothed up and eager to see what triple-action cards might look like.

Well …

Let’s just say that the backs of the cards were the best of the cards, thanks to high-quality full-color photos, complete stats, and verbose narratives.

The fronts?

Those were and are sort of hard to take — the grooved plastic covering and multiple exposures make the players hard to see unless you hold everything *just* right.

Still, at 200 cards, it’s a full-ish checklist that provides plenty of flavor from the middle of the 1980s hobby boom, and you pretty much have to have some Sportflics in your collection if you grew up before the 90s.
