That tends to happen when you establish yourself as probably the best player in the game at the tender age of 20 and then just keep piling on over the next decade.

With Trout having played in his tenth Major League season during the pandemic-shortened summer of 2020, that means he’s fully qualified for Hall of Fame eligibility down the road. He’s already a first-ballot lock (and has been for awhile), so the only question is … how will he stack up against the greatest of the great when his career if finally fully in the books.

While other players (like Mookie Betts and Bryce Harper) have challenged Trout for one-season supremacy during his run with the Angels, no one (ever) has put together the sustained excellence as the Halos’ centerfielder has over the first decade of his career.

I mean …

It seems like forever ago now that the Green Bay Packers selected the quarterback from Butte Junior College with the 24th overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.

Back then, of course, future Hall of Famer Brett Favre was the incumbent legend in Titletown, so Rodgers’ future in Green Bay was uncertain. Favre was still playing at a high level, after all, and he didn’t seem to want to go anywhere — retirement, another team, another planet.

And so, three seasons of uneasy tension followed, with Favre continuing his gunslinging ways with the shadow of the whippersnapper Rodgers growing ever more prominent behind him.

Finally, in August of 2008, just before the new season began, the Packers traded Favre to the New York Jets in exchange for a draft pick, and the future arrived in Green Bay.

Since then, Rodgers has started all but a handful of games (and half the the 2013 and 2017 seasons), running up a 126-63-1 record as a starter and leading the Pack to ten playoff appearances and a victory in Super Bowl XLV, he won MVP honors.

Along the way, Rodgers has built into himself into one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, climbing the individual statistical ranks like King Kong in Manhattan.

As Rodgers’ star has continued to rise in the game, so has his profile in the hobby. As with any prospect who debuted during the modern card era, Rodgers has been the subject of hundreds — maybe thousands — of cards over the years.

And that all began in 2005 with well over 200 rookie cards if you count all the parallels and variations. Amazing!

As A-Rod built his reputation and game with the Seattle Mariners during the 1990s, his cards rose right along with his fortunes in the game.

And, even as he gained a reputation for being somewhat self-centered and aloof after signing a monster contract with the Texas Rangers in January 2001, Rodriguez continued to build on his status as one of the greatest players in the sport.

Heck, many observers figured it might end up being an all-out footrace for the title of “Greatest Ever” between A-Rod and former Mariners teammate Ken Griffey, Jr.

A trade to the New York Yankees in February 2004 did little to dim Rodriguez’s star and definitely amplified his already megawatt profile in the game and beyond. For the next half decade or so, A-Rod continued to perform like the GOAT and added American League MVP awards with the Bombers in both 2005 and 2007, his second and third such hardware (the first came with Texas in 2003).

All during that stretch, his cards were among the hottest in the hobby — big surprise, right?

Even with diminished playing time due to hip (and other) ailments as the 2000s waned, A-Rod helped the Yankees to the 2009 World Series title, their first in a nearly a decade.

Of course, steroid problems in the 2010s, coupled with related suspensions and continued health issues, dimmed A-Rod’s star, with many deciding he wasn’t really worthy of the Hall of Famer, after all.

That notion will get put the test in 2022 when A-Rod joins fellow PED taintees Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens on the Cooperstown ballot for the first time.

Will A-Rod make the cut?

That’s the day, on the eve of Spring Training, when the Boston Red Sox traded Betts and David Price to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Jeter Downs, Connor Wong and Alex Verdugo. And, just like that, one of the game’s greatest players had landed in its second biggest market to play for maybe its most glamorous team.

Already a superstar with legions of fans in New England and all across the continent, Betts suddenly found himself the subject of just about every conversation among the humongous Dodgers fanbase and baseball fans in general.

At just 27 years of age, Betts had already amassed a resume that featured a .301 batting average, 139 home runs, 470 RBI, 613 runs scored, a sparkly .893 OPS, four Gold Glove awards in right field, four All-Star appearances, and the 2018 American League Most Valuable Player award.

It was an astounding record that added up to nearly 42 WAR (Baseball Reference version) and a path the seemed to lead straight to the Hall of Fame.

The only real question as Betts headed to L.A. seemed to be how long he’d stay there, given that he’d expressed a willingness and desire to play on year-to-year contracts rather than sign an extension with the Sox — an effort to maximize earnings during his prime.

Well, it didn’t take too long for Betts and the Dodgers to lay those fears to rest.

On July 22, 2020, just as the truncated, pandemic-torn season finally got underway, the two sides agreed to a 12-year, $365-million extension.

And then Betts went out and had another MVP-caliber season, eventually finishing second in NL voting to Freddie Freeman, but getting the last laugh when his Dodgers copped the World Series title.

It was their first championship since 1988 and helped to make Betts even more of a diamond hero.

All along the way his baseball cards, especially those RCs, turned hotter and more expensive than ever.
