Aaron Judge rookie cards were among the most popular gems in the hobby before they even existed!
Say what?
It’s true … sort of.
See, in this modern hobby of ours, “rookie card” has a pretty specific (if convoluted) meaning — basically, it’s the first card of a player in a given standalone base set (not an insert, in other words) that’s issued after he reaches the highest level of competition (the Major Leagues, in Judge’s case).
Starting in 2006, Topps took things a step further by slapping the “RC” label on cards that met those criteria, plus showing the player in his big league uniform.
Based on all that, Aaron Judge‘s own rookie cards were slated for release in various 2017 sets, owing to his debut with the Yankees in August of 2016.
The thing is, though, Judge was the Yankees’ first-round pick back in the 2013 MLB Draft, which heaped a generous portion of attention on him right away. His huge 6’7″ frame and monster power potential didn’t hurt in that regard, either.
By the end of 2013, Panini, Bowman, and Leaf had already pumped several variations of Judge “prospect” and “draft” cards into the market, even though none of them qualified as true rookie cards.
The situation only intensified as Judge climbed the minor league ladder, and when he hit home runs in each of his first two games with the Bombers in 2016, the market for his cards was officially hot.
All before even one Aaron Judge “rookie card” ever saw the light of day.
Of course, Judge rocketed from mere young star to bona fide supernova the next summer (2017) when he hit 52 home runs to break the rookie record previously held by Mark McGwire (and topped — at 53 — by Pete Alonso of the Mets in 2019).
That total led the American League, though it fell short of future teammate Giancarlo Stanton‘s 59 with the Miami Marlins.
But his monster season landed Judge the American League Rookie of the Year Award and left him second (to Jose Altuve) in MVP voting.
And, oh yeah — Judge’s breakout cemented him as a hobby darling with all of his “rookie cards” skyrocketing through the summer and fall … semantics be darned!
Now, several years into his career, All Rise has experienced some ups and downs, but has also proven his status as one of the best hitters in the game, an All-Star, a Yankee favorite … and a hobby favorite.
His continued sway with collectors is conspicuous in the action and interest his cards see whenever they appear for sale, as evidenced by the following list of the most watched Aaron Judge rookie cards on eBay right now — updated every few minutes, so check back often!
