The 1974 Topps Pete Rose baseball card was a cardboard embodiment for a man who stood as an almost mythical figure when I started collecting baseball cards in the early 1980s.

For example, my dad used to tell me stories about Rose’s exploits with the Cincinnati Reds even though Dad was never a baseball fan and Pete had been in Philadelphia for about five years by that point.

It was relatively easy to find information about Rose in those pre-Internet days, too, which helped build him up as larger-than-life in my impressionable mind.

He was interviewed and written about in The Sporting News and Sport.

He was all over the pages of hobby publications like Sports Collectors Digest and Baseball Cards.

And he was featured prominently in every baseball card set and subset I came across — Topps, Fleer, Donruss, Topps Foldouts, Topps Stickers, Fleer Stickers, Topps All-Stars, and on and on and on.

Pete was a bona fide legend, but that wasn’t the only reason he was getting so much play. No, it was becoming clear that Rose would do whatever it t ook to hold on long enough to break Ty Cobb‘s all-time record for career hits, commonly accepted at the time to be 4191.

Hence, “4192” became synonymous with Rose and his chase.

Given all that, I expected to see Rose around each cardboard and paper corner as I devoured every bit of information I could find about baseball and baseball cards.

But I was a new collector, and my world was modern. I wasn’t at all prepared for the display case full of old cards that ran me over one day when my parents took me to a junk/antique shop in the next town over when I was about 11.

There were cards from the 1950s and 1960s, with names like Mantle, Mays, Aaron, Clemente, Koufax, and all the other mythical figures I was learning about.

It was a mesmerizing sight for young eyes accustomed to thumbing through wax packs filled with the round headshots of 1983 Topps and the bat-and-glove design of 1983 Donruss.

The Best of the Best

As mindblowing as all those golden swaths of cardboard were, though, one card knocked all the others to the side like a raging bowling ball and grabbed me by the throat — the 1974 Topps Pete Rose base card.

Of course, I didn’t know what issue it was from at first sight, and the card probably looks pretty mundane to modern collectors. After all, 1974 Topps features some of the grainiest photos and one of the more blah designs of the entire decade.

But, man, Pete looked absolutely perfect in this shot.

His laser stare was locked on an unseen pitch rocketing his way. He gripped the bat in both hands, throwing it forward to bunt the ball. His legs were already motoring toward first base, so confident was he that he’d succeed in his mission.

And just in case things didn’t work out, Pete’s mouth hung open as if he’d take a bite out of the ball if it came to that.

This man was throwing his whole being into getting on base for his beloved Cincinnati Reds, and the simple red banners accentuated Rose’s Cincy uniform.

The whole concoction was a red-alert, blood-pumping bundle of baseball grit that was irresistible to a young fan with a burning passion for the game.

It was a masterpiece in cardboard for which I gladly plunked down my hard-earned $3.50.

A pittance to pay for a card that still burns as one of my favorite from the 1970s more than 30 years later.

Just look at that steely gaze on Cobb’s 1914 Cracker Jack card or the challenging, choked-up stance on his T3 Turkey Red issue. He looks as if he’s ready to club any ball, or man, who comes his way into submission.

And that seems to be a fitting depiction of the player who is often described as one of the most fiery competitors the game has ever known and likely one of its nastiest characters, as well.

After all, when Cobb retired in 1928 at the age of 41, he held the all-time records for hits (4191), runs (2244), stolen bases (897), and batting average (.366), among others. By all accounts, he climbed those statistical mountains on the back of his enormous talent and a complete lack of compunction when it came to driving spikes deep into the legs of defending second basemen or punching out opponents whom he might perceive as impediments.

Apparently, Cobb was not above engaging in fisticuffs off the field, either, even if his sparring partners were not always as physically capable as the legend himself.

So, through a litany of pasteboards issued during the first quarter of the 20th Century by tobacco companies, candy makers, and other vendors lucky enough to capture his likeness on cardboard, Cobb’s fierceness and competitive nature shone through on his cards, threatening to burn them to ashes.

And, much like the stars of recent generations, the cardboard love did not cease when Cobb retired.

Indeed, old Tyrus Raymond Cobb was one of the marquee names when US Caramel rolled out their 32-card set of sporting legends in 1932 (although the set is often referred to as a 1933 issue). Along with Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Jimmy Foxx, Cobb headlined a checklist that featured 27 baseball players and a handful of standouts from other sports.

But, while card #16 of Fred (Lindy) Lindstrom is famous for being one of the most rare and valuable in the hobby, the image of Cobb is perhaps the most interesting in the set.

Gone are the intimidating full-body shots topped off by a direct stare daring you to take one more step toward him. Missing is the air of danger that accompanies just about every card released during Cobb’s career.

Issued four years after his retirement, the US Caramel card shows a mid-40s Cobb who appears decidedly human. His once thin and athletic shoulders seem to be thicker, almost soft. His gaze is offered through squinting (maybe myopic?) eyes, and is cast off to the side. Even Cobb’s face is doughy, hinting at a decent amount of body-weight gain.

Is Cobb an early inspiration for Elmer Fudd?

Has he just finished his shift as a baker at the local pastry shop?

Or has Tyrus changed his rabble-rousing ways and turned to the cloth, intent on making a run at the Papacy?

In the end, it hardly matters, because any Cobb card is a desirable gem for collectors, and that US Caramel #14 can fetch several thousand dollars depending on condition.

Maybe, though, just maybe, a small dollop of that premium is due to the enduring human riddle that Cobb represents, and his un-Cobbly appearance on this forgotten hobby classic.

And, of all the Wax Pack Gods that I worshipped as a kid in the 1980s, Rose was always one of the most difficult to come by. He was in all of the same overproduced sets as Walt Terrell and John Mizerock, but somehow there never seemed to be enough Pete Rose baseball cards to satisfy my appetite.

Maybe it was because I was a Reds fan or maybe it was because I was in awe of Rose’s exploits on the field as he marched toward Ty Cobb’s legacy at an age when he should have been collecting Social Security and taking up woodworking.

Rose wasn’t my favorite player — that was and still is Mike Schmidt — but Charlie Hustle did intrigue me like no other.

And he touched the same nerve with the hobby at large, as his assault on the all-time hits record was maybe the first large-scale milestone watch that was accompanied by escalating card prices. In many way, Rose’s 1963 Topps issue was instrumental to the burgeoning rookie-card craze.

The Pete Rose bubble was also one of the first to burst when he succumbed to a gambling scandal in 1989, and demand and prices tumbled through the 1990s.

Over the years, though, as the steroid taint touched players who had eclipsed Rose in the public eye, many fans began to take a more positive view of Rose, at least in terms of his on-field accomplishments.

As support has grown in recent times for Pete’s reinstatement, or at least for his induction into Cooperstown, the values of his cards have stabilized and begun to climb again, too. That’s especially true for quality graded copies of his early pasteboards.

And, after 27 long years, Pete Rose was finally inducted into the Hall of Fame in late June of 2016. Of course, Rose was enshrined in the Reds Hall of Fame and not Cooperstown, but it did get his name into the news again and sparked new interest in his cards.

Turns out those same cards that were so elusive 30-40 years ago have held a decent amount of their value over the decades and, thanks to the wonders of the Internet, you (and I) can look at them anytime you want.

If I’m being completely honest, most pre-War baseball cards leave me colder than Municipal Stadium on Opening Day.

I think I know why, too — the players have no life in my memory.

Most of the guys who appeared on cards after World War II were at least alive at some point since I was born, and I’ve seen a good hunk of them play either in person or on television. At the very least, I’ve probably read an interview with them or heard a second-hand story about them.

But, man, those players who hung up their spikes before 1941 might as well be Plato or Ben Franklin. I know some of them were awesome and others were true characters, but I don’t have any personal evidence of that.

Don’t get me wrong — I’d love to own a T206 Honus Wagner or a box full of Goudey beauties, but none of those make my blood thrill like a glimpsed corner of a 1976 Topps Mike Schmidt or a 1963 Maury Wills.

Those guys are part of my sports story.

In the Mood for History

That said, I do find that I can warm up to the “old” vintage cards given the proper mood lighting and setting. In particular, when I read a great old book like The Glory of Their Times, or when I’ve been hitting the antique shop circuit, the dusty cardboard from 70-120 years ago starts to pull at me.

Because, even though I don’t know that much about all the players, I do know plenty about the big names in the game. And it’s getting easier all the time to find information on the Internet about most players who have ever trod a Major League field.

So, yeah, there is a certain mystique to holding a 1909 tobacco card in your greasy little fingers, even if it’s slathered in Lucite and does not depict the honorable Honus.

And the gum cards that checked in before World War II are some of the most colorful in the history of the hobby. Who wouldn’t want to add some nice Goudeys and Play Balls to his collection?

One century-old set that always calls to me whenever it’s near is the 1911 T3 Turkey Red cabinet series.

A Big Turkey

Another tobacco issue, the Turkey Reds were larger than their T206 cousins, checking in at a huge 5-3/4” x 8” and printed on heavy cardboard stock. Each card showcases a hand-painted print of the player in question, surrounded by a thick gray-brown border. The player’s name is included on a gold “plaque” along the bottom border.

These are some of the most gorgeous cards ever produced, and many of the images are downright iconic. That shot of Ty Cobb standing with his bat just off his shoulder and staring at you with a misty Bennett Park (?) looming in the background is one of the best baseball images of all time.

But the Turkey Red set wasn’t just about individual baseball players, as it also featured a handful of more generic action shots.

Among my favorite baseball cards of all time is card #46, “Safe at Third.”

This landscape masterpiece shows a New York Giants player sliding into the shins of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ third baseman, both enveloped by a cloud of dust which appears to be carrying the ball along with it.

Who Are They? What Did They Do?

I don’t know who these players are, thought the Pittsburgh third basemen during that era was Bobby Byrne, so there’s a good chance he’s manning the hot corner on this card.

What really intrigues me is the background.

Not far behind the two players is a light brown band that may be a fence of some sort, but honestly looks more like an open field or a dirt road. Beyond that is dark and gritty skyline, replete with smokestacks, blurry city dwellings, and even the hint of a crucifix emerging from the shadows.

My first impression is that we’re looking at the hard-life neighborhoods near Pittsburgh’s Forbes Field, and there are some photos from the time that might fit that idea. The uniforms of the players, however, suggest that the game is in New York. Maybe what we’re seeing, then, is Manhattan around one of the old Polo Grounds.

Whichever park it is, there are tens of thousands of personal stories lurking just behind the men playing baseball in the colorful foreground of card #46.

What did they do for a living? Where did they come from? Did any of the boys in those obscured homes go on to craft their own Major League careers?

That uncertainty and sense of wonder makes this card irresistible — once you warm up to its charms.

Today’s challenge assignment: A card that reminds you of a family member.

This is both easy and impossible for me.

Easy, because pretty much all my cards remind me of my father. Impossible because — how do I choose?

Even though my dad has never been a baseball fan and never collected cards himself, he always supported, wholeheartedly, whatever I loved growing up.

So when I “found” baseball and baseball cards in my preteen years, he was right there. As my collection grew, he became almost enthusiastic as I was in chasing down the cards I wanted.

Nowhere was that more evident than in our joint pursuit of Pete Rose cards as the Cincinnati Reds’ player-manager mounted his assault on Ty Cobb‘s all-time hits record.

The most striking example of Dad’s support, though, and the one I return to again and again, is the story relayed below.

So, if you’ll indulge me, here is the tale of how I landed a 1986 Topps set on a hot and steamy summer night.

Sacrifices

On a night much like tonight more than 30 years ago, I was a chubby little teenager on the brink of high school. I don’t remember much about that day, but I’m sure it was hot and humid, and I’m sure I spent the afternoon frolicking in the side yard or watching soap operas with Mom or luxuriating in piles of baseball cards.

And at the end of the day, when it finally got dark, I came inside and ate some great food, took a bath, and cooled off in the air conditioning. Maybe Mom and I played a game, and we almost surely watched Newhart or Cheers or Star Search.
