As a long suffering Mets fan dating back to 1962, I can tell you that Straw's 1984 Topps card isn't even close to being the most awesome opening day card in Mets history. Of course, growing up, the first Mets card of any season to come out of a pack was special, whether it was Duke Snider in '64 or Ron Swoboda in '66 or even Dick Kenworthy in 1968. But the one card that I, at least, waited for, anticipated, WANTED BADLY through an entire off season was...1970 Topps #1...the team photo of the Mets with the words "World Champions" engraved above them for all of eternity. It was as if I'd spent the entire winter hyper-ventilating in fear that the dream had been just that--a dream--and that card existed to prove to me and anyone would ever dare doubt that, yes, the Amazin' Mets had won it all in 1969 and no one could ever take that away from us. THAT is the greatest opening day card in the history of the Mets. Maybe some people don't find team cards to be "awesome", but, if you were a Mets fan who root root rooted for the home team through a decade of last place finishes, that one was the most awesome card that ever was.
