I think standardization of some sort was inevitable once cards started bringing such big prices. But, yeah, things got a lot less fluid as we all started to expect graded pieces. That’s one of the things that has made coming back to the hobby fun, though — you can buy some pretty cherry cards for less than you would have thought possible during the boom.

The guy behind the counter would look at the card and make sure it was mint, and say ok let’s get the Beckett. It’s the card grading that slowed it down . Got to pay someone to tell you its mint condition. Ridiculous.
