If you ever find yourself in the mood for a good ol’ hobby discussion — or debate — but can’t find any collectors to jaw with, you can always head over to Blowout Cards Forums to get your fill of cardboard talk.

As the name implies, Blowout Cards Forums is a discussion board run by Blowout Cards, one of the largest hobby retailers going, who offer up new product across all four major sports, plus more fringe sports, plus non-sports titles like Garbage Pail Kids, Marvel, Star Wars, and others.

Their forums are broken down along these general lines, too, with major divisions dedicated to general hobby talk, card breaks, buying and selling among members, and even off-topic issues of the day (not necessarily hobby-related, that is).

And, even though Blowout Cards trends very modern in their offerings, and even though baseball isn’t always the main focus, there are plenty of gems for even us old-school diamond enthusiasts to dig into … and to lose a few hours reading and kibitzing.

To whet your appetite, here are five great, fun — and long! — baseball card threads on Blowout Cards Forums that just might swallow up your evening or weekend.

Topps Project 2020 is the worst product since 1991 Fleer

Nothing like a bold statement as a title to get people clicking and chiming in, huh? And this one has done its job like a champ since it was started by a now-banned member in March of 2020.

Is Topps Project 2020 really the worst product since 1991 Fleer?

And, is 1991 Fleer really the yardstick against which all terrible modern baseball cards should be measured?

It’s a fire-starter of a proclamation that has generated nearly 4100 pages of responses as of May 2022 … and folks are still chiming in from time to time.

What do you think about 1991 Fleer, and about Topps Project 2020?

No matter what your opinion, you’re bound to find someone who will debate it with you ’til the cows come home.

HOF PC Collectors Thread

One of the great things about this hobby and the internet is that we collectors are usually pretty happy, and often even proud, to showcase our cardboard conquests by posting pictures of our cards online for others to enjoy (or envy!).

This thread is a great example of that, and it’s exactly what it says it is — a back-and-forth among all who want to participate, detailing their personal collections of Hall of Fame baseball cards.

Here you’ll find listings of what people already have, want lists of the cards they still “need” to add, and, often, pictures of their treasures.

The posts can be enlightening (if you learn about a “new” card you never knew about), inspirational (“look what he put together!”), intimidating (“look what he put together!”), entertaining, and fulfilling (trades and sales) all at the same time.

Show Off Your Rare 90’s Inserts Thread

If you were a collector in the 1980s and “survived” into the 1990s, then you no doubt remember the Coming of the Insert Card.

That pretty much all started with the 1990 Upper Deck Heroes Reggie Jackson autograph cards, even though there were inserts of various ilk that had made their way into the hobby in the preceding decades.

But, man, as the marketplace got more and more crowded for the dozens of card brands jockeying for collector dollars in the early-to-mid 1990s, they all needed a way to differentiate themselves. For awhile, it was all about ratcheting up card quality (or perceived card quality) and scarcity (or perceived scarcity).

You can only gold-plate base cards so much, though, so companies and brands started inserting even more limited and “special” cards in their packs: refractors, autographs, cards with hunks of equipment attached, one-of-ones, and on and on and on.

Much of that hype and insert love has persisted into today’s market, but there’s nothing quite as nostalgic as the original. And that’s what this thread is all about — talking about and showcasing those trailblazing inserts from the 1990s.

If this is your era, this is a can’t-miss thread, no doubt.

Topps out—Fanatics in

The biggest hobby story of the last couple years? Of the last decade? Of the last 70 years, even?

It could just be the news that broke during the summer of 2021 — Fanatics had been granted exclusive MLB and MLBPA licenses to make baseball cards, which meant that Topps was out after seven decades as The Real One.

But that wasn’t he end of the story, because Fanatics also landed exclusives for football and basketball.

And even that wasn’t the end of the story, because Fanatics *gasp* bought Topps in January 2022.

What’s it all mean for the hobby and the future of your baseball cards (and other sports cards)? Those are questions we’ve all been asking since the original Fanatics news broke.

And they’re the questions that collectors continue to hash through in the “Topps out—Fanatics in” thread on Blowout Cards Forum.

Anyone Here Collect 80’s PSA rookies?

Remember when you were going to put yourself through college, retire young, put your kids through college, and buy that villa on the Riviera, all courtesy of the Kurt Stillwell and Ruben Sierra and Greg Swindell and Jose Canseco rookie cards you were hoarding like they were gold bullion?

They weren’t.

But, even though thousands (millions?) of then-young collectors eventually had our hopes of cardboard riches dashed by the realities of oversupply and the human fallibility of even our favorite players, that doesn’t mean all Junk Wax is junk.

Indeed, thanks to the emergence of third-party grading in the 1990s and 2000s, and the pandemic-era hobby explosion, many of those beloved 1980s rookie cards are enjoying at least a mini renaissance, both in popularity and in pricing. After all, there are only so many PSA 10 copies of even the most common of dirt-common 1980s cards.

In this popular thread, collectors show off their PSA copies of those classic ’80s RCs, and they also talk about their experiences with this segment of the hobby. If you’ve ever wondered what the toughest part of a 1986 Topps Traded Tiffany Will Clark rookie card is, condition-wise (border yellowing), this discussion will be right up your alley.

Hobby News and Commentary

The sports card hobby is in a state of constant flux thanks to a never-ending parade of new releases, new discoveries about “old” releases, and on-field developments that shape the market. To keep up with this flurry of activities, collectors turn to the sites below, which feature a solid mix of news stories, op ed pieces, and good, old-fashioned blog posts on various aspects of the hobby, from vintage to modern.

Price Guides and Auction Reports

“What’s my card worth?” It’s been the most common question among baseball card collectors for decades now, ever since we discovered that our cards might be worth something. While the answer to that question is dependent on many factors — condition, season, market size, etc. — it’s always helpful to have guides that aggregate market trends or auction results, and that’s where these sites shine.

Reference Sites

For veteran collectors, maybe the most amazing aspect of the Internet is the ability it affords to find information about any set we can imagine. If we wanted to learn about Trans-o-gram statues and cards 20 years ago, we were left to scour through one of the yearly catalogs published by SCD or Beckett, or to consult our local dealers. Now, no matter what the topic, we can just bang out a few keystrokes, and the answer appears on our screens, courtesy of sites like these:

Forums

From the earliest days of the hobby, collectors have gathered to talk about baseball cards. In the beginning, there were mailing lists pulled together by scrappy hobbyists who couldn’t get enough information. Those lists led naturally to regional groups and, eventually, to in-person meet-ups at card shows during the 1970s and 1980s. The convention circuit may not be quite as fruitful now as it was 30 years ago, but collectors are finding each other online in numbers that our old networks could never have supported. Here are some of the forums helping us stay connected like never before.

Blogs

The baseball card blogosphere is loaded with collectors who love to talk about their own cards, cards they had as kids, cards they wish they had, phantom cards, mocked-up cards, and maybe cards they dream about. Many of these folks congregate in blogging communities like Blogspot, Tumblr, and WordPress.com, and their posting habits run the gamut from daily musings to once-a-year-drop-ins. Most of the sites in the list below are “niched-down” and focus on a very narrow swath of the hobby, and some of them haven’t been active in years, but all of them have something to offer if collecting and nostalgia are your game.

Over the last several years, a new niche of baseball card site has emerged: the set blog. A set blog generally follows a collector through building one particular issue of baseball cards. Other times, the blogger, writes about cards — sometimes all of them — in the chosen set, relating amusing anecdotes or connecting them to other baseball news or memories. Whatever form the set blog takes, it’s always a treat for readers to be able to dig deep into the particulars of a single issue.

Few allegiances in life are stronger than that of the hardcore baseball fan for his favorite team. So it’s only natural that baseball card collectors would focus at least part of our hobby efforts on our the clubs we follow … and some of us write about it! That’s exactly what the bloggers below have done, giving us the beast team-based baseball card blogs.

There is nothing in the world quite like cracking open a wax pack of baseball cards, or a box or case of the latest hot issue. After all, this is how most of us got started in the hobby in the first place, and, aside from the chance to pull a great find, it’s hard to beat the nostalgic hit of a pack of cards. It’s not surprising, then, that “breaking” has emerged as a niche among card collectors seeking to reap the vicarious thrills of wax-pack treasure hunting, and these sites are some of the most popular in the genre.

Once upon a time, hobbyists would meet up in the lobby of sports card shows to buy, sell, and trade their cards to build up their collections. In fact, many dealers lamented the fact that, at some shows, most of the transactions took place outside the showroom rather than inside. Today, the Internet makes it easier than ever to find the cards you need and the collectors who have them, and the sites below have developed into modern versions of the show-front marketplace.

As it became clear that the new cards we all drooled over in the 1980s and 1990s were mass-produced to the extent that they were virtually worthless as soon as we opened the packs, and sometimes before, collectors began turning their attention to vintage material and serial-numbered, graded, or authenticated newer cards. Auction houses, which already had a strong foothold in the hobby, offered collectors and sellers alike a trusted place to buy and sell these “best of the best” items, and the hobby turned to them both for mind-blowing offerings and as a barometer of the high-end market. Here are some of today’s best auction houses.

Grading Services

As the hobby has moved further and further from the “junk wax” days of the late 1980s and early 1990s, collectors have increasingly placed a premium on scarcity, authenticity, and condition. This maturation has made grading and authentication services more important than ever, and the grading companies have become invaluable resources in judging the relative scarcity and value of our cards. Many of these companies maintain informative and entertaining websites, such as those listed here.

Retail Sites

In the “old” days — prior to the Internet — collectors bought their cards at the local department store, at card shops and shows, and, very occasionally, through mail-order catalogs and ads. As the hobby has changed over the last couple of decades, though, so have the avenues we’ve used to build our collections. Now, the lion’s share of all card transactions happen online, and retail sites like the ones below are the lifeblood of the the hobby for many collectors. If you buy baseball cards online, then you need to check these out.

By some estimations, there are nearly 40 billion new blog posts published every day*. Of those, nearly 3 million are related to baseball cards.**

(*possibly a slight exaggeration)

(**completely made up)

So it’s understandable that you might miss a few of the best hobby pieces here and there.

And, with the Internet closing in on the end of its first century (not true), there are bound to be some really great posts from several years back that you either never saw in the first place or have completely forgotten about.

Lucky for us, nothing on the Internet ever really goes away.

Even luckier for you, I had a hankering for the past today and decided to wind back my time machine … all the way to 2010.

Here, for your enjoyment, are 10 posts from that year that I found entertaining, intriguing, or odd. Hope you enjoy them, too.

Corey Brinn delivers a cool story about a hiking trip with buddies that uncovered a Shangri-La baseball card shop-shack in the mountains of Georgia. As you read this tale, keep in mind that the Owltown Baseball Card Shop still turns up in current Google searches, and plan your vacations accordingly.

This is a quick-hit piece in which “adarowski” at Beyond the Box Score lays out the concept for a baseball card back based on Sabermetrics. It’s an interesting idea that garnered plenty of discussion seven years ago. What would be on the back of your ideal baseball card?

In this piece, Ryan O’Hara gives you some idea as he relates to the New York Times the story of how his father helped lay the foundations that would eventually land Ryan in the CEO slot with Topps (he stepped out of that position in 2013).

Back in 2010, Dave Jamieson released one of the best books about baseball cards ever written: Mint Condition. With Baby Boomers hitting retirement age and Gen Xers moving into mid-career, the book drew interest from all corners, including Slate, who presented this excerpt to their readers.

By Opening Day of 2010, everyone knew that baseball cards from the 1980s weren’t worth spit — the market crash was complete. But T.W. Burger at Penn Live maintained that the hobby was on the verge of a comeback, and he cited the experiences of several veteran collectors and dealers as evidence. So what do you think — are baseball cards “back”?

It’s always interesting to see what mainstream folks think about our little hobby, and baseball cards tend to get a fair amount of play in business-related publications. The Spokesman-Review, a Spokane-based newspaper, took on the ever-popular question of how to figure out card values in their business section with this piece. They hit most of the familiar tropes and struck a truism with one of the final quotes from Topps’ Warren Friss:

They’re meant to be fun, and looked at and played with. It’s not always about making an investment. For some people it’s just the fun of looking at their heroes.

The Baseball Card Hall of Infamy

Some baseball cards transcend their 2-1/2″ x 3-1/2″ boundaries to become American icons because of their importance — the T206 Honus Wagner, the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card, the 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey, Jr., rookie card. Some cards, though, gain notoriety for being mistakes, visually odd, or just downright silly. Drew Dernavich takes aim at these cards in his Baseball Card Hall of Infamy — be forewarned, though, because some of your favorite cards are likely on this list.

Comedian Joe Zimmerman reflects on his childhood baseball card collection and how he thought it would be worth BIG BUCKS when he made it to adulthood. Sound familiar? Zimmerman goes beyond the usual lament of lost cardboard riches, though, and draws parallels between those cards and other tenuous investments before making some do-buy recommendations of his own. Those included … dirt, weeds, bottled fog, Yugos, and stray cats.
