Score’s second baseball issue is no great work of art, and it was produced in quantities so large that the cards are generally not worth much at all these days.

On the other hand, ’89 Score does present a clean look, with decent photography on both card fronts and backs. It’s also graced with a pretty strong rookie card crop.

And … well, all those cards on the market means it’s not impossible to find “perfect” specimens, as in cards that grade out at PSA 10 (for example).

Some of those gems still hold some value, too.

What follows, then, is a list of the most valuable 1989 Score baseball cards, based on recent eBay sales of PSA 10 specimens. We’ll start at the bottom of the pile and work our way to the most expensive cards.

1989 Score Greg Maddux (#119)

After a couple of years of putrid records and ERAs, Maddux broke out to the tune of 18-8, 3.18 ERA. It was teh first salvo in what would become an unassailable assault on a spot in Cooperstown.

It also added a bit of extra oomph to the sight of the future Mad Dog in Cubbies pinstripes, as we see on this bright 1989 Score card.

1989 Score Sandy Alomar Jr. Rookie Card (#630)

Everybody was pretty sure in the late 1980s that the Alomar boys were going to be something special. All we were unsure about was a) when they were going to arrive and b) which one would get to the Hall of Fame first.

As it turned out, Roberto won both those battles, as it took Sandy, Jr., a couple more years to get on track. When he did, though, he won the 1990 American League MVP award for the Cleveland Indians.

Before that, he appeared on this extreme close-up 1989 ROOKIE card in that year’s Score set.

1989 Score Ryne Sandberg (#35)

By 1989, Ryno was a bona fide superstar, and all of his cards were sought-after gems each spring.

This Score beauty shows the Cubs’ Hall of Fame second baseman in action, white pinstriped uniform blazing in the Wrigley Field sunshine and the fabled ivy photo bombing the whole tableu.

Cardboard doesn’t get much more 1980s baseball-y than this!

1989 Score Rickey Henderson (#70)

Like Bonds, Rickey Henderson is one of the greatest players of all time, one who also did his damage mostly while playing left field.

In 1989, Henderson was about to embark on maybe the most productive stretch of his career, and he would be on cardboard fire in the hobby by the time he broke Lou Brock‘s stolen base record in 1991.

Rickey’s cards maintain a lot of that glow even today, and this 1989 Score fits that bill.

1989 Score Cal Ripken Jr. (#15)

Cal Ripken hit something of a lull in the late 1980s — as his games-played streak marched on, his batting averages and overall production slid downward.

The Orioles legend took a lot of heat, too, with plenty of folks suggesting he should rest now and then in the name of boosting his output.

Cal, of course, resisted and forged a resurgence in the early 1990s that cemented his place as one of the most popular players to ever lace up his spikes.

Not surprisingly, Ripken’s cards are almost always among the most valuable in the sets they’re part of, and this 1989 Score is no exception.

1989 Score Barry Bonds (#127)

Yep, people love to hate Barry Bonds.

Yep, he’s having all sorts of trouble getting into the Hall of Fame.

But, nope …

None of that changes the fact that he’s one of the greatest hitters of all time, and enough collectors believe in that notion to keep his cards on the high-value list.

This early-career Pirates card is a must-have for Bonds collectors.

1989 Score Jose Canseco (#1)

After watching Wally Joyner steal his early-season thunder in 1986, Canseco stormed back to win the American League Rookie of the Year Award.

Then, then next summer, Jose took a backseat to A’s teammate Mark McGwire and Big Mac clubbed 49 home runs to smash the rookie record and become the darling of baseball.

Not one to take a loss of spotlight lightly, Canseco declared far and wide that he would hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in 1988, thereby chartering the 40-40 Club.

And, by golly, if he didn’t go out and club 42 with 40 steals. He led the A’s to the World Series and was named A.L. MVP for his efforts.

Oh, and he also scored (ha!) card #1 in the 1989 Score set. That’s this one, in case you missed it, and it’s still something of a landmark pasteboard, albeit in a cheap and cheesy sort of way.

1989 Score Edgar Martinez Rookie Card (#637)

You can debate the merit of the designated hitter all day long, but it’s hard to deny the sheer quality of Edgar Marinez’s stats at the plate … .312/.418/.515 with 309 home runs among his 2247 hits, good enough for 68.4 WAR.

Also good enough for Hall of Fame election in 2019.

Thirty years before that, Edgar made his Score debut, and that rookie card is still a collector favorite today.

1989 Score Mike Schmidt (#149)

Schmidt struggled with injuries in 1988, and they continued to pile up the next spring, eventually leading to his abrupt retirement in late May.

Even as he hung up his spikes, though, the Phillies legend looked pretty dar mighty there in the confines of his 1989 Score card, connecting hard in his powder blue Philadelphia uniform.

In a way, then, for Schmidt fans especially, that makes this the most valuable of all 1989 Score baseball cards.

1989 Score Craig Biggio Rookie Card (#237)

Biggio was once a promising catching prospect, one who showed every sign of making good on that promise, as evidenced by a Silver Slugger and All-Star appearance at the position before moving across the diamond to second base in 1992.

This 1989 card of the the budding superstar was Biggio’s first base Score issue — he appeared in the Rookie/Traded set in 1988 — and remains popular with collectors.

1989 Score Will Clark (#450)

Clark led the National League with 109 RBI and 100 walks in 1988, and he made his first All-Star team for his troubles.

Then, while collectors were pulling this color-mismatched Score card in 1989, Clark was busy putting up 8.6 WAR en route to finishing second in National League MVP voting to teammate Kevin Mitchell while leading the San Francisco Giants to the World Series.

Sweet-swinging Will The Thrill has better Hall of Fame credentials than some guys already enshrined, and if he ever does get the call, you can bet this 1989 Score card — and every other card featuring The Natural — will see a nice price bump.

1989 Score Kirby Puckett (#20)

Already a superstar after the Twins run to a World Series title in 1987, Puckett became something of a monster in 1988 — .356 batting average, 24 HR, 121 RBI, 109 runs, 358 total bases.

All of that only served to amp up demand for Puck’s cards even higher than it already was.

This Score entry, featuring a classic shot of Puckett in the batter’s box, is as popular today as ever.

1989 Score Tony Gwynn (#90)

After the home run barrage of 1987, pitchers took back a big hunk of their territory in 1988, thanks in large part to some fiddling around with definition of the upper reaches of the strike zone.

The effect was a dramatic reduction in top-end home run production and, in the National League at least, a dampening of batting averages.

I mean, it was so bad that Tony Gwynn — he of the two batting tiles and amazing .370 average the year before — could manage only a measly .313 in 1988.

Which turned out to be six points better than the next N.L. scrub could manage — Rafael Palmeiro finished runner-up for the hiting crown with a .307 mark.

Not that any of that mattered to collectors, who kept right on chasing Gwynn’s 1983 rookie cards, as well as smiling ear to ear when we pulled a new Mr. Padre card — like this one — from our 1989 packs.

1989 Score John Smoltz Rookie Card (#616)

Smoltz took an unusual path to Cooperstown, but he made it there, anyway.

Like Dennis Eckersley before him, Smoltz turned his experience as a starter into a stellar late-career run as a closer.

Unlike Eck, though, Smoltz returned to the rotation his last few years.

That combo pack made his election inevitable, and it also keeps his Score RC in the hobby limelight today.

1989 Score Don Mattingly (#100)

Mattingly saw his power plummet in 1987 and, especially, 1988, dropping from 31 home runs and an MLB-best .573 slugging percentage in 1986 to a much more pedestrian 18 dingers and .462 SLG in ’88.

As it turned out, that was our warning sign that Donnie Baseball’s back troubles would be his doom, but at the time, fans and collectors alike sort of looked the other way and kept pumping money into his merchandise and cards

And, though we may never see The Hit Man in Cooperstown, his 1980s hobby mystique is tough to shake, as evidenced by his presence here among the most valuable 1989 Score baseball cards.

1989 Score Mark McGwire (#3)

Big Mac was up and down in performance and popularity over the first ten years or so of his career. But once he landed with the St. Louis Cardinals and settled in to a groove that saw him smacking home runs at a historic pace season after season, it was all up, up, up for McGwire and his baseball cards.

Until, you know, the PED bubble burst.

The man who broke Roger Maris’ single-season home run record is unlikely to ever be elected to the Hall of Fame, but there are still plenty of collectors who cherish the memories and the cards that stir them up.

1989 Score Nolan Ryan (#300)

Talk about a guy who always has some of the most valuable cards in a set!

No one can carry Nolan Ryan’s jockstrap when it comes to popular and expensive baseball cards, and that general theme applies here, too.

This 1989 Score was among the last base cards to show Ryan as a member of the Houston Astros, and it even features the rainbow shoulders to good effect.

The reward for that artistic effort is a tidy price tag for perfect graded copies.

1989 Score Gary Sheffield Rookie Card (#625)

Once upon a time, Gary Sheffield was the can’t-miss nephew of Dwight Gooden, a young man who was going to rewrite the record book.

Then came attitude issues and some early struggles that dimmed his shine, and we weren’t sure anymore.

Then came a trade to the San Diego Padres and the beginning of an upward trajectory that would take Sheff to eight MLB franchises in 22 years and leave him with more than 500 home runs and nearly 2700 hits.

He was a masher whose numbers say “Cooperstown,” but, alas, steroid-laden clouds have wrecked his HOF campaign.

Still, Score his rookie card sticks around lists like this one.

1989 Score Bo Jackson (#330)

Bo in Blue was a sight to behold, and the baseball cards that take us back to those precious few moments when he was at bat, when everything seemed possible, still hold an indescribable mystique for us oldsters who witnessed one of the greatest athletes of the last half century (at least).

Like all the other cards on this list, there are plenty of these to go around, but there’s even more demand for a piece of the Bo Jackson nostalgia.

After all, this just may be the most hopeful of all 1989 Score baseball cards.

1989 Score Randy Johnson Rookie Card (#645)

In 1989, Randy Johnson was huge, gangly, fast, and wild.

And he was trying to make his way with the Montreal Expos. A trade to the Seattle Mariners not long after his Score rookie card hit store shelves, though, set the stage for Johnson to become the Big Unit.

Three decades later, Johnson is a living legend, and his first Score card brings the heat whenever it’s on display. This one stands tall in a constant battle with the Bo above for the title of most valuable of all 1989 Score baseball cards.

Actually, collectors’ love affair with Jackson cardboard started even before then, thanks to 1) the hype that surrounded him as a two-sport, Heisman-Trophy-winning phenom taking his cuts in the batter’s box and 2) the rookie card mania that gripped the hobby in the mid-1980s and prompted companies to get some Bo cards into circulation at the end of 1986.

And, even though Jackson’s career was slowed down and ultimately cut short by a devastating hip injury suffered during an NFL playoff game in 1991, our fervor for his baseball cards has only grown over the years.

What follows is a rundown of the 20 most valuable Bo cards, with a few qualifier. Namely, all the cards on our list …

• Were issued during Bo’s career
• Are unique to the list in terms of appearance (so, you won’t find 1987 Donruss and 1987 Leaf, though there is one near-exception)
• Not one-of-one, buy-back, autograph, relic-added contrivances

The values listed below are based on recent selling prices for cards in PSA 9 condition, though if you look hard enough, you can find 10s of most of these without too much problem … at a much steeper premium, of course.

Alright, with our ground rules established, let’s dig in and wallow in the 20 most valuable Bo Jackson baseball cards, starting at the bottom …

1992 Topps Gold Bo Jackson (#290)

We start off with Bo in the unfamiliar black and white of the Chicago White Sox, an advent brought about by the hip injury that ended his football career in January of 1991.

After the Royals released him in March, the ChiSox signed him in April, and he worked his way to (new) Comiskey Park by September.

That was enough to get him in the 1992 Topps set as a southsider.

But this is no ordinary base card – it’s a 1992 Topps Gold card!

Considered by many to be the first true parallel, Gold featured all 792 cards from the base 1992 set, but with gold foil over the player and team name bar at the bottom of the card. Gold cards were inserted in all pack types, including vending boxes (five per box) and even factory sets (ten).

Collectors could also send in 100 runs from the “Match-the-Stats” game cards (also included in packs) for ten gold cards. It didn’t take consumers – and Topps – long to realize that you could game the game by shining a flashlight through the Match-the-Stats cards to reveal the answers and “win” every time.

Topps’ response was to stamp the Gold cards sent out as part of the game with an extra “Winner” gold label. These Winner versions of the Gold cards (shown here for Bo) are more plentiful than the “plain” Gold cards, but none are exorbitantly valuable.

1990 Kenner Starting Lineup (Black and White) Bo Jackson (#)

By 1990, Kenner Starting Lineup figures had become something of a staple in the hobby, even if they were tough to store and display.

And, you couldn’t have a mainstream issue without Bo Jackson,

(Jackson was also part of the 1989 Starting Lineup set, but his individual card from that series doesn’t come up for sale very often at all in graded condition. Hence, its absence here.)

Bo had two cards in his ‘90 package – a yellow-bordered one, and this one, which checks in at a slightly higher price point.

1986 Donruss ‘The Rookies’ Bo Jackson (#38)

“The Rookies” was Donruss’ answer to Topps Traded and Fleer Update, and you have to hand it to them for their honesty. Because, make no mistake about it, all of those late-season issues were all about milking everything the companies could from the rookie card craze.

And 1986 was a perfect year to jump into the fray, thanks to an amazing rookie class that included Jose Canseco, Wally Joyner, Barry Bonds, Kevin Mitchell, Ruben Sierra, and so many others.

The Rookies captured them all, but it’s this Bo Jackson rookie card (along with Bonds) that sits at the top of collector wantlists today.

1987 Donruss Opening Day Bo Jackson (#205)

The card companies of the 1980s whipped out some pretty innovative designs and creative ideas in an attempt to nose out the competition. Donruss Opening Day fit that bill to a “T.”

As the name implies, Opening Day included cards of the guys on every team’s Opening Day roster in 1987. As such, it was issued later in the season, when collectors were caught up in breakout rookies and looking forward to the fall issues – Rookie and Traded sets, mostly.

Opening Day gave Donruss a nice little hobby bump during what would normally have been a lull in new card sales, although distribution was limited. This 272-card run was offered only as a complete set, sold in a long flat box with five cellophane-wrapped bricks of cards face up.

The Barry Bonds-Johnny Ray error card is the most famous in this issue, but collectors still chase after Bo Jackson in his Kansas City Royals home whites, too.

1987 Fleer Bo Jackson (#369)

While Topps and Donruss bought in on Bo Jackson with their year-end sets in 1986, Fleer held off until 1987.

That makes this 1987 Fleer not only Bo’s FFC (First Fleer Card), but also a true rookie card, since it was one of the first to be nationally distributed through retail outlets (i.e., through wax pack sales at your local drugstore, etc.).

Fleer’s 1987 blue fade has always garnered mixed reactions, but there’s no doubt it provides a handsome tableau for Bo and his power-blue Royals togs.

Fleer also issued a glossy version of their 1987 set, issued in a colorful tin, and which is thought to have been “limited” to about 75,000 copies of each card.

There is little difference in price between the glossy and base versions of the Jackson RC.

1987 Toys ‘R’ Us Rookies Bo Jackson (#13)

Baseball cards seemed to turn up everywhere during the hobby boom of the 1980s, and that included at beloved toy stores like … Toys “R” Us.

The 1987 Toys R Us issue jumped in on at least a couple of big hobby trends of the day, as it was a 33-card box set dedicated solely to rookies (or rookie cards, at least).

Today, the black borders make these cards a bit tough to come by in the very top grades, and they seem to have captured – and held – more collector interest than many box sets of the day.

The Bo Jackson card in this set features the Royals’ young slugger going to work in the batting cage on a sunny day. Hard to beat that imagery!

1990 Score Bo Jackson (#697)

Almost no one considers 1990 Score a landmark set, and it has mostly been lost in the avalanche of different issues and rampant overproduction of the era.

But this black-and-white shot of a shirtless Bo Jackson caused gasps and groans and sighs and shrieks from the moment it was released. A series of Nike posters with the same theme only helped solidify this image in the consciousness of fans and collectors everywhere.

Today, this card is a hobby icon, and collectors from all walks of life chase it like defenders trying to catch up with primetime Bo streaking down the football field toward the end zone.

1991 Topps Tiffany Bo Jackson (#600)

Topps finished up its run of eight straight Tiffany parallel sets in 1991 with what most consider to be the hardest to come by. Indeed, with an announced print run of just 4000 factory sets, these cards are downright scarce by the standards of the day.

Add in an understated and classic design on the typical premium white cardstock (for Tiffany) with a super glossy finish, and you have a recipe for success with collectors.

That goes double for this action-packed shot of Bo Jackson barrelling down the baseline.

1987 Topps Tiffany Bo Jackson (#170)

Topps produced an estimated 30,000 Tiffany sets in 1987, hardly scarce by any modern definition.

But this Bo Jackson rookie card has a few things going for it …

• It’s a glossy and somewhat limited version of a downright iconic baseball card
• It’s a Bo Jackson rookie card

1987 Leaf Bo Jackson (#35)

The third of a four-year run, 1987 Leaf was a partial parallel of the 1987 Donruss set, targeted at the Canadian market. The 264-card set featured more Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Expos than any other teams, but it captured the complete run of Diamond Kings and Rated Rookies to start the set.

Bo Jackson, of course, was part of that RR subset, checking in at #35. The more scarce Leaf bumps the Donruss version on this list, owing to the accompanying higher card value for top-grade specimens.

1987 McDag Auburn Tigers Tiger Great Bo Jackson (#)

Issued by McDag Productions in 1987, the 11-card Auburn Tigers Tiger Great set is a mouthful, and it’s also one of those 1980s issues that looks like someone put it together on that new Commodore 64 they got for Christmas.

Either way, Bo shows up twice, once as a football player and once as a baseball player. The latter seems to be more popular today, at least judging by the PSA Population Report, though it doesn’t come up for sale all that often.

That means pricing is a bit tough to pinpoint, so you may see a wide range if you’re ever in the market for one.

1986 Memphis Chicks Gold Bo Jackson (#28)

The 1986 Memphis Chicks issued two sets of cards featuring their players from that summer – one with gold borders and one with silver borders.

Cards were numbered according to the players’ uniforms, so Bo shows up as #28 in both runs.

There doesn’t seem to be a huge difference in availability of the cards, with neither Jackson hitting the open market in top condition all that often. The lower ranking of the Gold version here could well be just a matter of timing and who had a burr to bid up the Silvers when they sold most recently.

1986 Donn Jennings Southern League All-Stars Bo Jackson (#13)

Pretty much everyone wanted to get in on the card-production gold mine of the 1980s, and that included some dealers themselves.

A longtime super dealer, Jennings likely wouldn’t have been able to score MLB or MLBPA licensing, but the minors were a different story.

And, with Bo Jackson, Jose Canseco, Billy Ripken, Mark McGwire, and others graduating (or on the verge) from the Southern League, jumping on that circuit’s all-stars was a shrewd move.

Ads for these cards were everywhere back in the mid-to-late 1980s, and you could usually find plenty of them at the local card shop. With such wide exposure, the sight of this Bo pre-rookie became ingrained in our collector brains.

Today, this translates to a popular card that carries a fairly hefty price tag in top graded condition.

1987 Classic Bo Jackson (#15)

The Classic board game was popular among both fans and collectors almost from the get-go when it was issued in 1987. Of course, for collectors, there was always the tension between playing the game the way it was intended and trying to keep the cards in pristine condition.

Indeed, the 100-card issue included with the game featured a pretty nifty green-bordered design, along with a lineup of the best players in the game plus rookie cards of guys like Barry Bonds, Devon White, Benito Santiago, and, of course, Bo Jackson.

That Bo card showcased the familiar theme of his being a two-sport star, in this case, swinging a bat while kneeling in his Auburn football jersey and pads.

Bo was also part of the 50-card, yellow-bordered update “travel” set released later in the year, but this one takes the cake from a popularity and value standpoint.

1986 Memphis Chicks Silver Bo Jackson (#28)

This is the silver version of the Bo Jackson Memphis Chicks card, featuring a different image than we see on the gold version.

The silver also lands at a higher price point here on our list, but, like we discussed with the gold, that could be mostly a point-in-time market artifact.

1994 Finest Refractor Bo Jackson (#241)

Topps Finest was back for a second go-round in 1994 after it set another new standard for super-premium cards in 1993.

Bo Jackson was back in the Finest lineup, too, appearing as a California Angel at the end of a career that would wrap up that summer when the players went on strike.

And, of course, the real game changers were back in 1994, too – Refractors were seeded one in nine packs and available as parallels for every card in the base set, including Bo’s.

1991 Topps Desert Shield Bo Jackson (#600)

In 1991, with the U.S. embroiled in the first Gulf War, Topps produced a special run of their 40th Anniversary set and earmarked them for troops serving in the conflict.

These cards were identical to the base Topps cards from that year, but with a special gold-foil stamp on the card front that included a palm tree above Operation Desert Shield text.

Issued in 15-card packs that were indistinguishable from “normal” packs, these cards were intended to be shipped to the Middle East, but many of them ended up staying stateside.

With an estimated 6000 of each card produced (give or take a few hundred), it’s no surprise that the Desert Shield issue is one of the most popular of the early 1990s. Combine that with the legend of Bo Jackson and great photography, and you have a hobby winner.

Be aware that there are plenty of fakes out there because the stamp was evidently pretty easy for shysters to replicate. Trading in authenticated/graded copies is the safest bet for this one.

1993 Finest Refractor Bo Jackson (#91)

Any ground that Topps gave up to upstart Upper Deck or the premium and super-premium issues that Donruss and Fleer pushed out in the early 1990s was made up in a flash in the fall of 1993.

Jumping into the high end of the new-card market with both feet, Topps pushed out this 199-card beauty with an announced print run of 4000 cases, each containing 12 boxes. That equates to about 30,000 of each card, which was perceived to be a pretty stingy amount back in those days.

Even stingier?

The distribution of the razzle-dazzle Refractor parallels, which seemed to be seeded at about one per box – most estimates have fewer than 250 of each Refractor in existence.

So, no surprise that a super-scarce Bo Jackson card has inched its way toward the top (or bottom, as it were) of our list.

1986 Donruss Highlights Bo Jackson – ‘Highlights’ in White (#43)

At about the same time collectors were ogling Bo’s first Donruss card, in “The Rookies” late-year issue, we also had the chance to nab another Jackson issue from Big D.

This “Highlights” card celebrates Bo’s historic bomb he hit at Royals Stadium that summer.

But the actual word “Highlights” across the baseball on the card front was supposed to have been rendered in yellow. Some of them got out into the wild with white lettering, though, and that error version is scarce enough that it commands a significant premium today.

1986 Topps Traded Tiffany Bo Jackson (#50T)

For as bereft of strong rookie cards as the 1986 Topps base set was (Vince Coleman and Ozzie Guillen were the top of the heap for years, with Darren Daulton, Len Dykstra, Cecil Fielder, and Mickey Tettleton adding some beef later on), the 1986 Topps Traded set is downright loaded.

In that 132-card boxed set you’ll find extended rookie cards (XRCs) of Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonilla, Jose Canseco, Will Clark, Andres Galarraga, Wally Joyner, John Kruk, Kevin Mitchell, and Kurt Stillwell (couldn’t leave that one out!).

And, of course, Bo Jackson.

For all the great baseball cards that Jackson appeared on during his all-too-brief diamond career, this one is undoubtedly the most desired and most widely collected.

The Tiffany edition, which was limited to 5000 sets distributed through dealers, only ramped up the price equation for all these guys, Bo included.

Incidentally, if you move up to a PSA 10 copy of this Jackson beauty (of which 37 exist at the time of this writing), you’re looking at a five-figure card.

There on top are the tired eyes of a head-only Roger Maris, looming large over the men below him, and adorned with the simple note: “New York — 61.”

If you didn’t already know the context, the shield to Rajah’s left gives it away: “1961 American League Home Run Leaders.”

No mention of the dramatic race with Yankees teammate Mickey Mantle, nor the fact that “61” represented a new record, topping the 60 Babe Ruth put up in 1927.

No mention of a potential asterisk, either, like the one that commissioner Ford Frick opined might be appropriate if the home run record fell in more than the 154 games that were the norm back in the Bambino’s day.

As it turned out, it took Maris the full, newly-crafted 162-game schedule (and then some) to take the cake.

But card #53 in the 1962 Topps set has more to offer than Maris and his exploits, as great as they were in 1961 and as understated as the man himself tended to be — just like the way this card underplays his record-setting achievement.

There to the lower left is Mantle himself, a legend long before the 1961 season, who finished with 54 dingers despite landing on the shelf toward the end of the season.

And there in the middle of the bottom row is Harmon Killebrew, who recorded the second of his seven 40-plus-homer seasons in 1961 en route to 573 in a career that spanned 22 years.

After recording 42 and 31 home runs for the Washington Nationals in 1959 and 1960, respectively, Killer was no secret, but his 46 bombs in 1961 were a nice housewarming gift for Minnesota fans welcoming the team to the upper Midwest for their first season.

That last fella, though, way over on the righthand side of the card, was a bit more surprising to find included among the likes of the M & M Boys and Killebrew.

Sure, Jim Gentile had hit 21 home runs for the Baltimore Orioles son his way to finishing second in A.L. Rookie of the Year voting in 1960, but that was his age-26 season. And it came after eight minor league seasons and two stilted attempts to break into the majors.

Could Gentile ever be expected to do any better than that?

Well, expectations or not, Diamond Jim cranked up his swing right along with the other sluggers in 1961, connecting on 46 long balls of his own and leading the American League with 141 RBI (tied with Maris).

Add in a .302 batting average, and it was good enough to land him in third place in the MVP race behind Maris and Mantle.

As with Maris, 1961 ended up being Gentile’s absolute peak, just ahead of a decline beginning in 1962 and then accelerating through the next four seasons.

Though he would stick in the Phillies’ minor league system through 1968, Gentile never made it back to the big leagues after a 33-game, 2-homer showing with the Cleveland Indians during the summer of 1966.

He finished his big league career with a .260 batting average to go along with 179 home runs and 549 RBI, good enough for 17+ WAR, six All-Star selections (two each season from 1960-62), and a status as one of the early Orioles stars after the team moved from St. Louis (Browns) in 1954.

Oh, and — of course — an understated spot on an understated hunk of baseball history masquerading as a classic woodgrain baseball card.
