The best Griffey rookies *visually* are the Topps Traded and the Score. The Upper Deck is nothing but a spectacle and though the super close up shot is somewhat iconic it still "phones it in". Although I do like the back of the upper deck. Lots of glossy reading material.

Agreed that it's a great card, and I said as much in the post. I don't love it, though, for the reasons listed. Still fun to write and talk about. Thanks for commenting.

Sorry, I get your premise, but I can't read the whole post, or anything but the title, the first paragraph or so, and a quick scan of everything else. I'm a lifelong Griffey fan (Reds kind, not the Mariners kind) and he's pretty much the reason I'm a baseball fan and that I've collected cards for a lot of my life. It's a great card. It made fans out of so many kids who were born around 1980. I mean, yeah, go ahead and take the McGwire 1985 USA rookie, or the Frank Thomas 1991 NNOF or the Jeter '93 SP Foil rookie card or the A-Rod SP rookie card that had a die-cut parallel. There's nothing wrong to a traditionalist with those cards. Other than steroids, variant craze, foil effects taking over creativity, and parallel insanity. That Griffey card may be the last one that represented "awesome" for a 8 or 10-year old kid in 1989 in a way it represented "cool" for 10-year old kids who had a Mantle card in the 1950's. Today's cards probably can't represent that same thing for some kid born in 2008.
