But then there was a logjam of 11-5 teams including the Jets, the Patriots and the Broncos who missed the playoffs applying the tie-breaking rules. Denver might have been a serious Super Bowl contender had they made the playoffs. They were formidable where 2 losses were by 3 in OT to the Raiders and 2 other losses were by 4 to the Rams and Dolphins. The 1985 Patriots were a tough team and in hindsight it should come as little surprise that they beat the Jets, Raiders and Dolphins. They were right there with those 3 teams in terms of wins/losses. The only team that likely would have given the Bears a battle is the Dolphins. Marino would have feasted on the Bears secondary with his quick release.
