I was a little surprised by that, too. Thought he did better in the vote … guess memory is tricky! You make a good point about ballot competition, though. That was also Carlton Fisk’s first ballot, but he got squeezed out. Made the cut in 2000, along with Tony Perez.

I guess Ryan and Brett were some stiff guys to be on his first ballot with – but man 78% means he almost didn’t get in.
