I was ten or eleven years old and had never seen a pitcher, one, in such control of the ball and of the game and, two, exude such joy in the effort. One of the most memorable aspects of Blue’s stellar year was the way he ran to and from the mound. Every inning. It was as if he could not wait to get on the field and, when leaving, it was as if he thought the sooner he got off the diamond the sooner he could get back on. If you never saw him pitch that year, you can have no idea just what a joy-filled phenom he was. Thank you, Vida Blue, for some extraordinary images, on film and on cardboard and forever etched in my mind.]]></description>
