I agree there are quite a few players whose stats would put them ahead of Baines in terms of HOF standing — Lou Whitaker is my current favorite who is still on the outside looking in. I sort of hope we can look at Baines’ election as an anomaly, though, and not a new Cooperstown standard. Time will tell, I suppose. Thanks for reading and commenting!

Baines was a very good player and by all accounts a great teammate and generous person, but there’s probably at least 100 players more deserving of induction. Two of them, happen to be a couple of my favorites, Tony Oliva & Ken Boyer. Just a cursory glance at the career WAR list will bear me out. With all due respect to Harold, I’m not saying he shouldn’t be in HOF, but there are quite a few players as, or more deserving. Thanks for the great post.
